You know, I have a hard time pointing out the obvious to militant smokers who refuse to listen to common sense, even when it's in their own best interests. They just don't want to hear it, and I'd rather not confront them if I don't have to.
Why? Because militant smokers have this mistaken "Libertarian attitude" that smoking is their "choice", that NO ONE is going to "tell them what to do", and some of them seem to go out of their way looking for someone to challenge them about it.
I kid you not - this week I pulled into a gas station to fill up my car and saw this woman in the other lane smoking a cigarette while pumping gas. I gave her "the look", hoping she would understand her mistake. Instead, she only gave me a hard look back.
I figured that she was one of those militant smokers. So, I walked over to her to point out the obvious risks to her (and to us others) about her smoking while pumping gas, hoping that she would realize her foolishness and put out her cigarette before something tragic happened.
Instead, she told me to "eff-off" and to mind my own damn business (with a few other choice words). I wasn't shocked about it because, as I approached her, I could see it in her face and body language that she didn't want anyone to "tell her what to do". I knew she was going to go ballistic beforehand. It was like she was "hoping" someone would confront her.
Luckily, nothing happened. But a serious fire could have easily been started and she, and others (including me), could have been serious injured or killed.
So, when I read a news reports like this today, the first thing that's came into my mind was "militant smoker". No one was going to tell him what to do, no was was "going to give him shit" about his smoking.

Like I said - nothing good EVER comes from a nicotine addiction. Celebrate Fire Prevention Week by doing whatever you can to stop smoking - before it's too late.
