Australia will become the first country to require cigarettes to be sold in uniform packages after its top court rejected a challenge from tobacco companies, setting a precedent for other nations to follow.
The Australian law requires cigarettes to be sold with no company logos and with the same font for all brands on a dark brown background. Graphic health warnings will cover 90 percent of the back of the packaging and 70 percent of the front.

Cigarette use continues to decline in the United States
Over a 12-year period, total consumption of cigarettes fell 32.8%, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in the August 3rd issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
From years 2000 to 2011, total consumption of all combustible tobacco decreased from 450.7 billion cigarette equivalents to 326.6, a 27.5% decrease; per capita consumption of all combustible tobacco products declined from 2,148 to 1,374, a 36.0% decrease.
However, while consumption of cigarettes decreased 32.8% from 2000 to 2011, consumption of loose tobacco and cigars increased 123.1% over the same period. As a result, the percentage of total combustible tobacco consumption composed of loose tobacco and cigars increased from 3.4% in 2000 to 10.4% in 2011. So, despite continued decreases in cigarette smoking in the United States, we must continue to put our foot down in the battle against nicotine addiction.

Protect Your Kids From Tobacco
Many parents think drugs and alcohol are the greatest health threats to their children. But tobacco kills more people than illegal drugs, alcohol, AIDS, and car crashes combined.
The tobacco industry is working against you and intentionally targeting your child in hopes of making them a life-long tobacco user, giving you just one more thing you have to worry about. But, despite all of the negative peer pressure, web, TV, and movies your child is exposed to, as a parent, you’re the greatest influence in your child’s life.
