A Dying Breed

What's the Maine reason why women smoke? Because they think smoking is a commitment instead of an addiction. According to this video, women tend to cling to what has provided them the most comfort, security, and friendship in their lifetime: cigarettes.

The Consequences Of Smoking

I don't think that most people are fully aware of the consequences of smoking. So, let me present some enlightening facts about this terrible addiction.. AGAIN.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is now the third leading cause of mortality in the United States.

What's disturbing to me about this ranking is that COPD is also the most preventable disease, since approximately 85% of COPD diagnoses are attributed to smoking.

But, that's not even the half of it when it comes to smoking.

If one also includes just how much smoking contributes the the number one and two leading causes of death in the United States (Heart Disease and Cancer), and includes other deaths caused by smoking-related fires and accidents, then it's easy to see that smoking-related mortality is more sinister than is often reported.

And this data doesn't even include the negative affects smoking has on morbidity!

The sad fact is that nothing good comes from smoking. If you smoke, you're seriously at risk of living a less enjoyable life and dying much sooner (and more horribly) than you may think. Not to mention the high financial costs and consequences associated with smoking.

Is becoming a smoker really worth the inevitable consequences? I don't think so.

Hopefully, being aware of these unfortunate facts will serve as motivation for you to quit smoking, or to never to take up this disgusting, costly, and deadly habit in the first place.

Smoking is a death sentence that every smoker eventually regrets. Adrian's story.

Smokers Are Misunderstood

Smokers are a misunderstood bunch. Don't fear them and their secondhand smoke just "becuse" you don't understand them and their nicotine addiction.

Fear them for their their inability to realize their addiction, and to fully comprehend (or care) how smoking seriously affects their health or how it afffects others around them.

The "I Quit" Campaign

"I Quit!" is an international smoking cessation program specifically designed "Gunther von Hagens’ Body Worlds & The Brain" and presented by Arizona Science Center in partnership with the American Lung Association to encourage people to stop smoking as soon as they step foot into the exhibit, and see the physical effects smoking has on one's body.

How Serious Is A Nicotine Addiction?

Serious enough that two young Arizona teens decided to rob a convenience store just for a pack of smokes. It was just about 5:30 p.m. when surveillance video showed the two boys -- who police believe were only about 12 and 15 years old -- walk into the Shell Food Mart at 67th Avenue and McDowell in Phoenix.

Smoking Kills

Smoking is the leading cause of civilian home fire deaths. Most of the fires caused by smoking materials and related losses occur in homes, including apartments.

In 2008, these fires caused 680 civilian deaths, 1,520 civilian injuries and $737 million in direct property damage. One out of four fatal victims of smoking-material fires is not the smoker whose cigarette started the fire.

Thankfully, smoking-material fires (smoking materials are defined as lighted tobacco products, but do not include matches or lighters.) are down by 66% from 1980 to 2008. But, there were still an estimated 114,800 smoking-material fires in the United States in 2008.

Something to think about if you're going to live around smokers, or if you're a landlord who chooses NOT to convert your rentals into smoke-free environments.

Got COPD?

COPD is a serious lung disease that makes it harder and harder to breathe.

With COPD, your lungs don't work as well as they once did, so you'll find it more and more difficult to breathe. As the disease progresses, your symptoms tend to get worse and more damage occurs in the lungs. This damage is permanent.

What's more, tobacco smoke causes up to 90% of all COPD deaths. This includes exposure to secondhand smoke. The good news is that COPD can be prevented. A smoker is at least 10 times more likely to die of COPD than a nonsmoker. So, if you're a smoker, you can see why it's important to quit. Don't leave your loved ones with an achy breaky heart, stop smoking now!

Bronx Zoo Cobra Caught!

It's now safe to visit the Bronx Zoo herpetology house again after zookeepers report that they've finally captured the venomous cobra that escaped it's cage last week.

Where did zookeepers ultimately find the snake? Nope, it wasn't found in a wicker basket where many cobras seem to hide - that would be too easy. This snake was elusive and it's capture would require a little more effort.

So, the zookeepers employed a strategy borrowed from the tobacco industry.

They knew that they could easily exploit the cobra's short-term actions, only because this one cobra was a smoker. Knowing that smokers are predictable and easily manipulated, they knew that it was only a matter of time before the snake succumbed to it's nicotine addiction, and eventually popped out for a quick puff. That's when zookeepers nabbed him.

But, don't take my word for it. See for yourself.

Damn April Fools! They told me I'd look cool.
