How Serious Is A Nicotine Addiction?

Serious enough that two young Arizona teens decided to rob a convenience store just for a pack of smokes. It was just about 5:30 p.m. when surveillance video showed the two boys -- who police believe were only about 12 and 15 years old -- walk into the Shell Food Mart at 67th Avenue and McDowell in Phoenix.

Smoking Kills

Smoking is the leading cause of civilian home fire deaths. Most of the fires caused by smoking materials and related losses occur in homes, including apartments.

In 2008, these fires caused 680 civilian deaths, 1,520 civilian injuries and $737 million in direct property damage. One out of four fatal victims of smoking-material fires is not the smoker whose cigarette started the fire.

Thankfully, smoking-material fires (smoking materials are defined as lighted tobacco products, but do not include matches or lighters.) are down by 66% from 1980 to 2008. But, there were still an estimated 114,800 smoking-material fires in the United States in 2008.

Something to think about if you're going to live around smokers, or if you're a landlord who chooses NOT to convert your rentals into smoke-free environments.

Bronx Zoo Cobra Caught!

It's now safe to visit the Bronx Zoo herpetology house again after zookeepers report that they've finally captured the venomous cobra that escaped it's cage last week.

Where did zookeepers ultimately find the snake? Nope, it wasn't found in a wicker basket where many cobras seem to hide - that would be too easy. This snake was elusive and it's capture would require a little more effort.

So, the zookeepers employed a strategy borrowed from the tobacco industry.

They knew that they could easily exploit the cobra's short-term actions, only because this one cobra was a smoker. Knowing that smokers are predictable and easily manipulated, they knew that it was only a matter of time before the snake succumbed to it's nicotine addiction, and eventually popped out for a quick puff. That's when zookeepers nabbed him.
